| FONDAZIONE ADKINS CHITI: DONNE IN MUSICA Fiuggi, 18th August 2011 The City of Fiuggi has renovated and donated to us a mediaeval refectory. Our librarians, archivists and staff are re-organising music, books, paintings, lithographs etc while preparing for the European Meeting for WIMUST (8 - 11 September, Fiuggi) where we are hosting representatives from Women in/and/for Music organisations from Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Rumania, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and Great Britain. WIMUST is working to convince all EU member states to assume the European Parliament resolution of the 10th March 2009 on equality of treatment and access for men and women in the performing arts (2008/2182(INI)) Inequalities in access to decision-making posts, production and broadcast networks are apparent in all disciplines of the performing arts, and the objective of equality presupposes the systematic opening-up of all jobs to both men and women. Talent alone is not sufficient for the artistic quality of a performance or the success of a professional career and better representation of men and women in the performing arts would reinvigorate the sector. Existing inequalities leave skills and talents unexploited and are damaging to artistic dynamism, influence and economic development. Persistent prejudices lead to discriminatory behaviour towards women in selection, appointment procedures and work relations; women often receive lower remuneration than men even if they have higher educational qualifications, a stronger interest in training and networks. Obstacles to gender equality are particularly deep rooted and require specific steps to reduce inequalities, taking account of the leverage effect which that may have on society as a whole. Notwithstanding the economic crisis hitting the cultural sector, we believe it is essential for us to keep "moving" to enlarge the scope of our activities to obtain greater visibility for women who create music! In the Library we have two primary tasks: the inventory of all the music that has arrived in the last twelve months and updating of the Women Composer data banks.
