Reviewer Lynn Rene Bayley from Fanfare Magazine March/April 2012 issue
"...you’ll discover an album of remarkable tonal vignettes, each one a little gem..."
"Burton writes likeable melodies, then embellishes them with just the right seasoning,
never too much or too little, to make her musical soufflé rise just right."
Chris Lastovika, Opera Composer
"Right before I left to go out of town I received your CD and have listened to it
six times!I absolutely love it. The freshness, meaningful communication
and exquisite craftmanship make the time fly by. Thank you so much for sending it.
I have to add that it is very rare I want to hear anything once, much less six times in a row.
So thank you for that!"

One doesn't often find a CD with this kind of depth and variety. Here are friends who
have never met but have collaborated in so many ways to produce a fascinating CD
of beautiful music beautifully performed. Canary Burton is an artist as well as a composer,
and when she sent several of her paintings to Joan Yakkey, Joan was so impressed
and moved that she used them as inspiration for several of her songs. Anybody listening to
this CD will be impressed not only by the quality of the composition,
but also by the excellence of the vocal ensemble.

This CD features "Tempus Floridum," a ten-voice women's
chorus based in Florence, Italy. Their singing is rich, warm and
consistently engaging. You can hear their passion. The 19 tracksof this
CD move about in an astonishing range of musical styles. There are
arrangements of Italian folksongs but also a slew of very original pieces.
The inventiveness never ceases. Much of the music is a cappella but
there are surprising accompaniments featuring harp, cello,
piano, et al. The stylistic influences are many but the influence of jazz
is the most predominant. Yet you would never call this music "jazz" as such.
Some of this music is probing, some of it light and humorous, some of it
poignant and affecting, most notably Canary Burton's "American Lullaby."
All of it rewards careful listening.

First of all, my apologies for not having gotten
back to you sooner; yes, I got the first package of music,
your CD is MAGNIFICENT! I've been interested in music since
I was 13, have been hanging around musicians of all stripes
since then, and I don't think that I can ever recall personally
knowing a musician as talented as you are. I don't make
stuff like this up.
Such a delight

You just can't classify Canary or her music. Both surprise
you at every turn. Expect the unexpected as the music winds its way from start
to finish....I am particularly fond of Costa Brava.

Listened to your selections on MySpace and my favorites
are Gaia, Companion ( because I like this kind of intimate, beguiling, jazzy music)
and Victoria. Gaia and Victoria have a nice way of music unfolding in time, and
especially in Gaia, with some surprising moves. Yes, I can hear Satie hints in Victoria...

I went through your CD yet again this morning. Lovely music there! I am
particularly fond of gaia-noon, sometime after 1am and atlantic sonata.
Gaia-noon represents your control of "time" for drama and variety for interest and,
yes, I like the special places of counterpoint; certainly not academic, but just
wonderfully flowing and clear. Nice jazz in "sometime". I would say that
John Zielinski did quite well by you. All in all it's a wonderful CD. Congratulations.
Peter Blauvelt, Composer
Thank you much for your prompt response with two MP3 downloads.
I went ahead and listened to both, and must admit that your style is rather refreshing.
It is tonally based, but as you said, it is not traditional. University study
is really about expanding one's musical horizon (depending on the institution).
But if your style is the result of being more self-taught, then I suppose you didn't
miss too much from college. You did just fine - so keep up the good work!
Alexander Castello, Composer, Barcalona, Spain
It's a contemporaneus piece of music(never new age) with some misterious and suspense
at beginning and after some romantic jazz style. In your contemporaneus sonata
there are some feelings represented like funny, afraid, playing, intrigue, doubt...
Atlantic Sonata is a kind of voyage from different emotional landscapes and it's
running toward different weather seasons, moments of day, ... Exist a force that is
always below and waiting to appear that breaks everything. Is sweet sometimes
and destructive other times.Your piece invite to an amazing adventure.

We received Women in Harmony and listened last night. What a
pleasure! Your music is, like you, direct, honest, playful, quirky
and full of imagination and beauty. Thank you for such a gift...
and not just to us. I am so moved that, despite so much
difficulty-- so many setbacks-- you have persisted and succeeded in
blossoming this way

Yesterday evening, I met the pianist who will perform our 'Chopin' works

Compliments are always welcome from the musicians!

About the 2012 review in FanFare Magazine
Canary Dear: this is a very caring, I would even say , loving review.
It makes one to wanting to meet the composer in person. I also think that the reviewer is right
about the stylistic descriptions: somewhat between jazz-pop-and Better Broadway. In
the pieces I listened to, you always have some alluring moments, melodically and
harmonically, that makes me perk up my ears. On the whole, this writer is really
listening.! Congratulations.
